The case of the $200 flight to Central America
What usually happens when i find out about an amazingly cheap airfare is that when I go to check it out, it’s gone. Airfares are back to normal (read: high) prices.
But the morning I got back on the red-eye from Kauai (see below for a few choice shots), I received my daily email notification from Kayak notifying me of the lowest fares other have found.
Someone had found a flight from LAX to...

Art created from your DNA: kind of weird or super...
Science, meet art.
Just stumbled across this Groupon for a large canvas print of your own DNA. A cotton swab of your inner cheek cells is processed in a lab and a graphic designer turns it into a bold, futuristic print you can hang on your wall.
Voila. Art doesn’t get more personalized than that.

Traveling Without Baggage →
The Technium poses a simple question:
Can you seriously travel with no luggage at all?
The answer is equally simple:
Yes, you can.
I love the idea of traveling with nothing more than the shirt on my back, the essence of Total Nada, one of “the four modes of no-baggage travel.”*
In this mode you take your passport, a toothbrush, some cash, a cell phone, the clothes you are wearing,...

37 Asian Odysseys →
I am loving this NY Times list of must-sees in Asia.
Taking a slow boat ride on the Tonle Sap river in Cambodia reminds me of the families who live on - and during the rainy season, in the lake on stilted houses. I remember little babies floating in barrels who learn to swim before they walk and kids taking a boat to get to school.
Ubud, made famous by Eat Pray Love, brings back memories of...

Travelwho?
When I first learned about Travelzoo in college, I suggested one of their Caribbean packages to my roommate Andrea. She was planning a trip to Jamaica with her boyfriend and didn’t know where to start. The package was a great deal but she was skeptical about dealing with a company called Travelzoo.
Fast forward a decade (omg that makes me sound OLD), and Travelzoo is pretty much a household...

Make Cheap Flights Come to You
I know I sound like a Kayak junkie, and honestly, I am. (If Kayak is reading this, no thanks necessary.. but I wouldn’t turn down a free flight). It’s because I’ve done my research so you don’t have to and know what works. If it’s a website and has to do with flights, I’ve been there.
The easiest way to find cheap flights is to keep an eye on airfares on a...

First Stop: Kayak
My first stop when travel dreaming is usually Kayak’s Buzz webpage.
Buzz tells you what fares other people have found in the past several days. I love it because you can search by continent: Simply plug in your home airport and choose which continent you want to check fares for. Then, start imagining: Grenada for $440? Santa Cruz, Bolivia for $618? Tel Aviv for $900?
Or if you know...

What's in a Plan?
I’ve been pretty MIA, I realize, as I’ve been home in California for the past few months (that’s me as a retro flight attendant for Halloween) and have fallen off the blog train.
Fear not! Lately, I’ve been feeling the subtle nudges of motivation prodding me to pick up the keyboard and write about travel. Specifically the pre-trip part. Figuring out the where and the...
